Bolle Poplar
Р. bolleana Louche
Family Salicaceae. Grows wild in Central Asia.
A slender tree up to 30 m tall, with a columnar or narrowly oval crown and smooth greenish-gray bark, on old trees gray and fissured. Leaves 3-, 5- or 7-lobed, large, dark green and glossy above, white-woolly beneath. Male catkins up to 4 cm long, with bright red stamens.
Tolerates dry air easily. Tolerant of smoke and gases. Sun-loving. Heat-loving, one of the most heat-tolerant species of poplars. Wind-resistant. Demanding regarding the fertility and moisture of the soil. Grows very fast. Propagated by seeds, root suckers and cuttings.
In cultivation it has proven more resistant and longer-lived than the pyramidal poplar. A very decorative and valuable tree for greening the southern cities of Russia, long used in cultivation. Recommended for avenues, small groups, and garden-park compositions.
