Flowers for the garden
Bloomeria
Bloomeria
Family Araceae. Name: in honor of Dr. G. Bloomer (N. G. Bloomer). The genus contains 2 species occurring in North America (state of California).
Corm-bulb with a brown netted-fibrous tunic, globose, 1.5 cm in diameter. Leaves linear, keeled. Flowers in an umbel, numerous, star-shaped. The segments of the perianth are almost free from the base, linear-elongate. Stamens slightly shorter than them, all with anthers; the filaments at the base are surrounded by cup-shaped appendages. Flowers in summer. This is a distant relative of ornamental onions, as evidenced by the strong resemblance of its spherical umbels of star-shaped flowers to the inflorescences of Allium moly (Allium moly).
