Биарум

Biarum

Back to catalogue

Family Araceae. Description: of the 15 wild species of Биарум, only 3 are known in cultivation. Of these, only one is hardy. This odd-looking plant originates from the Mediterranean and Western Asia.

Биарум blooms in autumn, forming an inflorescence— a spadix—situated at ground level, as in all aroids, covered by a spathe. Leaves appear afterwards. Non-hardy species can be grown in pots kept in a greenhouse. Tubers are planted in the ground in summer; however, to prevent them from rotting they must not be watered heavily.
