Р. berolinensis Dipp.

Back to catalogue

Family Salicaceae. A hybrid between the laurel-leaved poplar and pyramidal poplar (Р. laurifolia x P. pyramidalis). It inherited cold hardiness from the first and a narrow crown from the second.

A graceful tree up to 30 m tall, with a narrow, almost cylindrical dense crown and light-gray bark. Shoots initially ribbed, later rounded, olive-colored. Leaves light green, glossy, with corrugated margins, up to 10 cm long; on vigorous shoots they remain green until late autumn.

In cultivation, predominantly male specimens are common. It grows quickly. Tolerant of excessive moisture. Responds well to pruning and shaping of the crown. Notable for considerable winter hardiness and undemanding nature regarding soil. Growth ceases late. Suitable for street and boulevard plantings as a park tree, and along the banks of water bodies. In northern conditions it replaces the more heat-loving pyramidal poplar.
