Family Asteraceae. Native to North America, where it occurs in moist meadows and marshes.

A perennial rhizomatous plant. Stems erect, branched, up to 160 cm tall, sturdy, becoming woody, leafy. Leaves small, sessile, with finely toothed margins. Inflorescences — flower heads 3-5 cm in diameter, grouped into large terminal corymb-like inflorescences up to 30 cm across. Ray florets yellow to reddish; disk florets dark yellow. Blooms from July to September for about 60 days. In cultivation since 1635.

Has numerous garden cultivars with flowers of various shades of yellowish-red:

'Гольдфукс' ('Goldfucks') - Flower heads up to 4 cm in diameter; ray florets bright brownish-orange with yellow streaks, disk florets brown. Blooms abundantly from late July for 45-50 days.

'Зонненберг' ('Sonnenberg') - Flower heads up to 4 cm in diameter; ray florets bright yellow, disk florets yellow. Blooms abundantly from August for 40-45 days.

'Кокарда' ('Kokarde') - Flower heads up to 4.5 cm in diameter; ray florets scarlet-red with a brownish tinge, yellowish at the edges, nearly red toward the center; disk florets yellow with a brownish tinge. Blooms abundantly from August for 45-50 days.

'Моерхейм Бьюти' ('Moerheim Beauty') - plant 90-150 cm tall, inflorescences bronze-red, blooms in July-September.

'Бутгерпад' ('Butterpad') - medium-sized plant, inflorescences golden-yellow.

'Чипперфиелд Оранж' ('Chipperfield Orange') - plant 150-180 cm tall, inflorescences large, orange, blooms in August-October.
