Aucuba
Aucuba
Family Cornaceae. Native to Japan. In cultivation the Japanese aucuba - Aucuba japonica is widespread. This is an evergreen shrub, in nature reaching almost 5 m in height, in indoor conditions it grows to about 1.5 meters. It has erect, well-branched shoots. Leaves are opposite, up to 20 cm long and about 5-6 cm wide, ovate in shape, with a serrated margin and a smooth shiny surface.
Depending on the variety the leaves may be uniformly green or have patterns of yellow spots, stripes, or various shapes. It flowers with small inconspicuous flowers of a reddish tint, gathered in loose panicles.
Temperature: Aucuba grows well in cool rooms. In warm rooms, where it is above 19-20°C, it may drop its lower leaves and lose its decorative appeal. It is better kept outdoors in summer. In winter a temperature of about 10-14°C is preferable, minimum 7 °C.
Lighting: Bright diffused light, protection from direct sunlight, tolerates light partial shade, requires good lighting in winter.
Watering: Abundant in spring and summer, moderate and cautious in winter.
Fertilizer: From May to August aucuba is fed weekly with a complete fertilizer for ornamental foliage plants. It is not fertilized in autumn and winter.
Air humidity: Frequent spraying — likes humid air; aucuba especially needs spraying if kept in a room with central heating in winter.
