Yellow asphodel
Asphodeline lutea (L.) Reichb.
Family Asphodelaceae. Grows on rocks and stony mountain slopes, rising to 1000 m above sea level, on forest edges, in shrubs, more rarely in steppes in the Mediterranean region of Crimea, Transcaucasia, southeastern Europe, Asia Minor and the Near East, and North Africa.
Plant up to 60 cm tall. Flowers yellow or greenish-yellow, up to 3-4 cm in diameter, arranged in a dense raceme; perianth segments narrow-lanceolate. Stem leafy. Leaves awl-shaped, 10-15 cm long and up to 0.8 cm wide, shortly pubescent along the margin. Flowering in late spring. Has long been cultivated. Frost-hardy. Grows well in any soil in open sunny locations. Requires good watering. Propagation by seeds and division of rhizomes in spring or autumn. A. lutea f. flore pleno - form with double flowers.
