Asparagus

Back to catalogue
Family Liliaceae Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World. It is divided into semi-climbing species - the feathery asparagus - and trailing (ampelous) species - the Sprengeri asparagus.

As houseplants, fern-like asparaguses with needle-like "leaves" are common: Asparagus plumossus - a compact plant with graceful, spreading branches in youth that gradually become bare at the base.

The smallest cultivar is Asparagus plumossus Nanus. The Asparagus Sprengeri Asparagus - densiflorus sprengery has pendant shoots with bright green "leaves" and red berries.

Less common but more decorative is Asparagus meueri. Its straight and stiff shoots, densely covered with "leaves", reach 40–55 cm in length and provide an effective contrast in compositions with plants that have large leaves.

Asparagus falcatus does not resemble a fern at all. It has large heart-shaped "leaves" and thorny stems that can reach one meter in length.
