Fruit trees

Asimina

Asimina

Back to catalogue

Family Annonaceae. The genus includes 8 species distributed in the United States. Six species grow in Florida, one occurs in Texas, one grows across almost the entire country up to the Canadian border, and it is this species that is of greatest interest for cultivation in our country.

The plant can withstand even severe winters with frosts (down to -29°). The flower buds of Asimina, which appear in early April, thanks to a thin insulating covering, tolerate spring frosts quite well. In the USA it is called "pawpaw", "Nebraska banana", "banana tree". Common names are related to the shape of the fruits - they are elongated like a banana, but considerably smaller in size.
