Large-leaved Aristolochia
Aristolochia macrophylla (= A. durior)
Appearance: climber (vine), 8-10 m long, 1-8 m wide, support stem diameter 2-3 cm, initially grows very little, from the 3rd-5th year grows rapidly, 150-200 cm per year.
Flowers: inconspicuous, bluish-brown, late April - May.
Fruits: rarely produced, about 10 cm long, cucumber-like, green, inedible.
Leaves: large, 10-30 cm long, light green, on long petioles, rounded; in autumn only individual leaves turn yellow.
Root system: shallow, wide.
Requirements: sun/partial shade, tolerates sun; on moist soils tolerates even high temperatures; very frost-hardy; suitable for urban conditions; moderately wind-resistant.
Soils: from fresh to moist, on all somewhat fertile substrates.
Note: shoots hang like a trailing train up to 3 m in length and width.
