Family Araceae. Herbaceous perennial up to 60 cm tall with an underground stem in the form of a tuber, naturally occurring in China and India.

The plant produces a single large leaf with a triply divided blade, and a brownish-red spadix with a spathe of original shape and coloration. Unlike other aroids, the spathe in Arisaema is inclined forward and ends in a fairly long drawn-out filamentous extension. The spathe's coloration features longitudinal alternating stripes of reddish-brown and gray color. Overall the inflorescence looks like an elegant striped flower. It blooms for about three weeks in December–January and does not set seed.

The plant has a prolonged dormancy period: approximately from May to October. During this time the tubers are stored in a dry place, watering rarely, about once a month. In autumn the tuber is planted in a mix of garden leaf soil and high peat and placed in moderately warm, well-lit rooms. Basic care for the plant consists of watering, which gradually becomes more abundant from the time of shoot emergence, and, conversely, is reduced by spring. With annual repotting, additional feeding is not necessary. For greater decorative effect the tubers are not separated during repotting—then one pot can contain two to three inflorescences with large leaves.

Resistant to pests and pathogens.
