Family Cyperaceae. In the wild the plant is confined to the subalpine belt of the mountain regions of Europe. A small evergreen perennial 5-10 cm tall, forming beautiful dense, stiff cushion-like tufts. Stems bear at their tips elongated spikes with male flowers, and below them 2-3 stalked female spikes. Extremely undemanding, it can grow in any soils except waterlogged and strongly acidic ones. Used in any corner of the garden, in full sun or partial shade. Particularly effective on screes and on retaining walls in rock gardens.
