Araucaria

Araucaria

Back to catalogue
Family Araucariaceae. Native to Australia, New Zealand and South America. A magnificent coniferous tree - the only conifer species among houseplants. Araucaria is easy to cultivate and attractive for the home interior.

Araucaria heterophylla - the most common species. This is a slow-growing plant with stiff branches covered with prickly leaves. It is recommended to grow it as a solitary specimen. There are also the Brazilian araucaria and the tall araucaria. It can reach a height of 1.6 m; keeping it in a small pot limits its growth.

Temperature: At any time of year this plant needs a cool place indoors; the desirable temperature is 10-12 °C. The plant tolerates temperatures above 15-16°C poorly; the needles begin to yellow.

Light: Bright, diffused light, light partial shade. In summer it feels better outdoors in the shade.

Watering: The plant requires constant abundant watering and absolutely does not tolerate the drying out of the root ball. It is also not recommended to water with hard water. Therefore araucaria is watered with well-settled, rain or boiled water.

Fertilizer: For feeding araucaria use a standard complex mineral fertilizer at half the dose, i.e. half as much as for other houseplants. Feedings are carried out from April to August every 3 weeks. Organic fertilizers are not used for araucaria.
