Aporocactus

Aporocactus

Back to catalogue
Family Cactaceae. A genus of Disocactus. Native to Mexico. Six species occur in the wild. Overall the genus Disocactus is complex and problematic to cultivate. In home conditions the easiest to grow is Aporocactus flagelliformis — commonly the "rat's tail cactus".

This is an epiphytic cactus native to tropical forests. The light-green stems, with weakly defined ribs, easily hang down over the pot. Spines are short, bristle-like, yellow-brown in color. Flowers are bright pink, very large (up to 7 cm in diameter) and look very spectacular on the thin stems, especially when there are many of them. Flowering begins in late winter. It should be noted that aporocacti flower quite easily and bloom abundantly. Although Aporocactus is fairly easy to grow, proper attention and care are still required. A spreading Aporocactus bush should be pruned periodically, removing elongated or unsightly shoots and dusting the cuts with sulfur or crushed charcoal.
