Stiff-leaved Aponogeton

Aponogeton rigidifolius

Back to catalogue
Family Aponogetonaceae. Native to the southwest of the island of Sri Lanka.

Stiff-leaved Aponogeton forms long narrow leaves, slightly undulating at the edges, dark green or olive in color. The plant's height in an aquarium reaches 50-60 cm. The plant should be placed in the background, in corners, or along the side walls of the aquarium.

This species of Aponogeton has become widespread due to its low demands, but even under favorable conditions it grows slowly.

Water temperature can vary between 22-28 °C, optimal 24-26 °C. At temperatures below 22 °C growth almost stops.

The stiff-leaved Aponogeton is one of the few species that requires harder water than its relatives. The most suitable water hardness for it is from 7-8° to 12°. The active reaction (pH) should be neutral or slightly alkaline.

Lighting can be moderate. For artificial lighting any light sources are suitable: household fluorescent lamps, incandescent lamps, or their combination. The power of fluorescent lamps should be at least 0.3 W per 1 L of water, incandescent lamps - 1 W per 1 L. A daylight duration of at least 12 hours is preferable. If natural light reaches the aquarium, the leaf coloration of the plant is often significantly brighter than with artificial lighting alone.

Substrate for the stiff-leaved Aponogeton should be moderately silty. It is desirable to add clay, peat, and charcoal to the substrate. Any type of substrate material can be used, but fine or medium gravel is preferred. The substrate should be laid in a layer at least 5 cm thick, since the plant forms a fairly well-developed root system.
