Madagascar Aponogeton

Aponogeton madagascariensis

Back to catalogue
Family Aponogetonaceae. The native home of this Aponogeton is the island of Madagascar. Presumably occurs on the Comoros Islands, as well as on Mauritius (introduced). The species exhibits great intraspecific variability. Individual populations require completely different conditions.

Madagascar Aponogeton grows in slow-flowing waters, in the deep shade of plants and trees overhanging the water. A delicate and fastidious plant with elongated, ovate leaves ranging from green to reddish-green. The tissue between the veins is completely absent. Leaves reach 30-50 cm in length and 6-8 cm in width. Madagascar Aponogeton is planted in a dark corner of the aquarium.

Due to the unusual net-like structure of its leaves, it has for many years undoubtedly been one of the most popular aquarium plants, despite the fact that it is very rarely possible to grow a long-lived and satisfactory culture in an aquarium. Therefore it is not recommended for keeping by ordinary aquarists, but should be cultivated by experienced specialists capable of maintaining the plant for a long time in accordance with its requirements.

This plant is especially sensitive to algae and old water. It is recommended to constantly change the aquarium water to fresh water of the same chemical composition and temperature as the previous water.

When placing the aquarium near a window, choose a north-facing location. If that is not possible, protect the illuminated side of the aquarium with transparent paper. Under artificial lighting, shade the surface of the aquarium with floating plants, and introduce fish that feed on algae, for example Ancistrus. Direct sunlight on the plant is undesirable; it is harmful to it.
