Aphelandra
Aphelandra
Family Acanthaceae. This houseplant is valued for its large beautiful leaves and abundant autumn flowering, when most other houseplants have already finished blooming. Flowering with large yellow or golden flowers may last for almost two months. However, it is a very difficult species to grow indoors, as it requires special care and attention. Aphelandra is a large-leaved, fast-growing plant.
Leaves may drop in winter due to drying of the roots; the soil should remain constantly moist. Drying out of the soil can lead to the loss of all leaves. Leaf drop can also be caused by cold drafts, watering with cold water, or exposure to direct sunlight.
Temperature: Aphelandra is warmth-loving, so it is kept at a normal room temperature of about 22-23°C, which in winter does not drop below 15°C.
Light: Bright light, especially in winter. From spring until late autumn it is shaded from direct sunlight.
Watering: From spring to autumn water abundantly, in winter somewhat less. The soil should be constantly moist, but water must not stagnate in the pot. Use only soft (rain, melted or boiled) and warm water.
Fertilizer: Because Aphelandra quickly uses up nutrients, it is regularly fed every two weeks. Use a fertilizer for flowering houseplants. Feedings are carried out throughout the year.
Humidity: Aphelandra likes very humid air, so it is misted several times a day or placed on a tray with water.
