Back to catalogue

Family Orchidaceae. This genus of sympodial orchids includes only one species, widely distributed in the tropics of the African continent. Growing in continental semi-deciduous forests and in open places with a prolonged dry period, it sheds its leaves during the dry season.

In cultivation, Ansellia requires strong illumination, intensive feeding during active growth, and observance of a rest period.

The only species of the genus - Ansellia africana (Ansellia Africana Lindl.). The native habitat of the plant is the semi-deciduous forests of the African continent; these biotopes are characterized by a prolonged dry period. During this time of year Ansellia completely sheds its leaves. This characteristic is retained in cultivation. Flowers are usually yellow; the petals and sepals are adorned with brown or dark purple spots. Flowers are borne by the dozen on terminal inflorescences. In the wild it blooms in winter; in cultivation - in spring and early summer. Flowering lasts 5-6 weeks.

Temperature: during growth and flowering between 18-25°C.

Lighting: bright; the plant requires a lot of light.

Humidity: high; misting is necessary, but do not mist during the rest period. Watering: abundant and regular during the growing season. Substrate: fairly fertile, a mix of sphagnum moss, compost and leaf soil.
