Family Vitaceae. It comprises about 20 species occurring in Central and East Asia and North America.

Deciduous woody lianas that climb supports by means of coiling tendrils. Leaves simple, entire, more or less deeply 3–5-lobed, palmate or pinnate, on long petioles. Inflorescences shield-shaped, regularly dichotomously branched. Leaves without opposite tendrils, less often with terminal ones. Flowers functionally unisexual, sometimes bisexual, small, greenish. The fruit is a small, inedible berry. In landscaping, four species have become most widespread.
