Family: Poaceae (grasses). Native to the meadows of northern Europe; now naturalized in North America.

A perennial grass with erect or arching leaves, mainly basal. Plant height 30-40 cm. At the time of flowering it can reach 90 cm. Flowers in June–July with silky, bristly spikelets. A valuable pasture species. In ornamental gardening the form 'Aureovariegatus' (synonyms 'Aureomarginatus' and 'Aureus') has become the most widespread. The plant has erect leaves that become slightly arching by autumn, golden with a green stripe. The cultivar is only 23–30 cm tall, non-aggressive and stable in cultivation.
