Family Betulaceae. The Far East, East Asia. Present in the Komsomolsky and Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserves. Grows in the understory of stone-birch stands or forms thickets on the middle parts of mountain slopes. A light-loving mesophyte.

Tree up to 10 m tall. Tree, at 20 years: height 6.8 m, trunk diameter 8.5 cm. Vegetative period from mid-April to the first half of October. Grows slowly when young. Flowers in the second half of May. Fruiting begins at 7–10 years, fruits ripen in October. Produces plants from seeds of GBS reproduction. Winter hardiness is high; in severe winters it is partially frost-damaged. Seed viability is 8%. About 30% of summer cuttings root when treated with a 0.01% solution of IMK for 16 hours. Recommended for landscaping in Moscow.
