Alnus fruticosa Rupr.

Back to catalogue

Birch family. Naturally distributed in the northeast of the European part of Russia, in the northwestern part of Western Siberia, throughout Eastern Siberia and in the Far East.

Grows as a shrub 1-3 m tall, less often as a small tree up to 6 m. Bark dark gray, shoots reddish-brown; leaves up to 10 cm long, ovate, doubly serrate, shiny and dark green above, glabrous, lighter on the underside, young ones fragrant and sticky. Unlike other species, it flowers at the same time as the leaves unfold. Flowers and fruits from 6 years of age.

Grows rapidly, fairly shade-tolerant, fully frost-hardy and undemanding with respect to soil, but requires its moisture. Very valuable for green construction in northern regions as an undemanding, attractive plant that retains the green color of its leaves for a long time. Suitable for hedges, borders, and plantings along the banks of water bodies.
