Family kremovikh . Grows in open woods and on shady slopes in the lower and middle mountain belts of the California mountains, reaching elevations of up to 2000 meters. This graceful plant in its native range is called "White Fairy Lantern" (White fairy lantern).
Stem 30-50 cm tall, glaucous, deeply branched. Leaves flat, linear, 15-50 cm long and 1-3 cm wide (upper ones 0.5-1.5 cm long). Flowers 3-12, nodding, globose, about 2-2.5 cm. In nature they flower from mid-May to mid-June. Sepals greenish or reddish, 2-3 cm long. Petals white, purplish at the base, 2-4 cm long, overlapping at the margins, finely yellowish-white pubescent over the entire surface. Plants with red coloration have been described, but they are very rare in the wild and so far have not been noted in collectors' catalogs. Anthers are three times shorter than the filaments.

Capsule 2-4 cm long and 1.5-2.5 cm wide, winged, with dark brown seeds. In the Sierra Nevada mountains interspecific hybrids of C. albus and C. monophyllus have been recorded. 2n = 20
