Hyacinth family. A garden-origin species, bred in Japan.
Plants small, without a waxy bloom, somewhat reminiscent of Н. lancifolia. Herbaceous perennial with a superficial rhizome and fibrous, cord-like roots. Leaves thin, broadly lanceolate or ovate-elliptic, dark green, with a white margin along the edge, the leaf blade up to 14 cm long, petioles large, grooved. Scapes up to 30 cm tall, erect, slender, with several small leaves. Inflorescence loose, racemose with an even arrangement of flowers. Perianth funnel-shaped, up to 6 cm long, lilac-violet with darker stripes, the lobes strongly bent backwards with white edging and a dark-colored tube. Blooms in July-August. Fruiting. Cultivated since 1830. There are forms with white flowers.
