Aeonium
Aeonium
Family Crassulaceae. Native to the Mediterranean, the Arabian Peninsula, Ethiopia. This genus of succulent plants includes about 40 species in the wild. All of them are plants with rosettes of rounded leaves. Some are small and low-growing, others reach about one meter in height on thick, woody stems. The coloration of aeoniums is very diverse, from yellow to dark purple — almost black.
Tree aeonium - Aeonium arboreum - the most widespread species. This is a sparsely branching shrub up to 90 cm tall (in natural conditions). Stems erect, brownish. Succulent leaves up to 6-7 cm long are gathered in dense rosettes that reach 20 cm in diameter. Leaves glabrous, edges fringed with fine hairs. Leaves can be of various shapes, for example spatulate or rounded, blunt, or sharply pointed at the tip. Leaves green, and in garden forms green with a purple margin or dark purple. Flowers are bright yellow, gathered in umbel-like inflorescences. A widely distributed variety of Aeonium arboreum is 'Schwarzkopf' with dark burgundy, almost black leaves.
Layered aeonium - Aeonium tabulaeforme - has a short, low trunk and a dense rosette of leaves, as if spread on the soil surface. This aeonium species can reach 40-50 cm in rosette diameter, at a height of about 10 cm.
Temperature: Moderate. In autumn a resting period at 10-12°С with dry conditions. Minimum temperature 8°С. In summer it is best kept outdoors on a balcony or in the garden. When overwintered in warm conditions it loses leaves and decorative appeal.
Lighting: Bright, intense lighting with direct sunlight. Aeoniums like lots of light and sun both in winter and in summer.
