Goutweed

Aegopodium

Back to catalogue

Goutweed is widespread in almost all regions of Europe, in Western and Eastern Siberia, in the Caucasus and the Sayan Mountains, and in the mountainous areas of Kazakhstan and Central Asia. In Ukraine it grows in forest and forest-steppe zones. It is often found in deciduous, mixed and spruce forests, among shrubs and on clearings, forest glades and floodplain meadows, near houses and livestock buildings, and in parks, forming extensive thickets.

Goutweed "Variegata" — Aegopodium podagraria "variegata"

A cultivated form of the common weedy plant found in the forests of Europe and Asia. The decorative cover of variegated leaves reaches 15-20 cm in height. Leaves are pistachio-green with a white margin (on young leaves the margin is creamy). Blooms from mid-June for about 2 weeks with white flowers in umbel-like inflorescences, which have little decorative interest; moreover, they should be removed, because seeds will produce the common weedy goutweed.

Location: prefers shaded sites. It is recommended to plant in underground containers made of tin or polyethylene with a perforated bottom to prevent it from invading other plants and to encourage the formation of more compact, denser clumps.

Soil: moisture-loving, prefers soil rich in organic matter.

Care: does not require intensive care, grows well without excessive intervention. Care consists of removing feral plants and seedlings from self-seeding, and thinning dense plantings.

Propagation: by division of rhizomes.
