Family Bromeliaceae. Native to Central and South America and the Antilles. About 170 species exist in the wild. Around 10 species and their varieties are commonly cultivated. The most common:

Aechmea fasciata - is an epiphytic plant with a dense rosette of leaves, numbering about 20, linear in shape, pointed at the tip, up to 1 meter long and about 5-8 cm wide, with a toothed margin. Leaves are green with broad silvery or white transverse bands. The scape is erect and densely pubescent. The inflorescence is capitate with pink bracts and a spiny edge. Flowers are small, sessile, with violet-blue petals. Flowering begins in early summer or in late winter.

Aechmea caudata - is an epiphytic or epilithic plant with a dense rosette of green leaves. The leaves are similar in shape and size to those of Aechmea fasciata. The scape is erect and pubescent. The inflorescence is panicle-like with red bracts. Flowers are small and sessile. Petals are initially yellow, then acquire a violet tint. Blooms in early summer.

Aechmea bracteata - is an epiphytic or epilithic plant with a large elongated rosette of leaves. Leaves are green, leathery, about 1 meter long and 8-10 cm wide with large curved spines along the margin. The scape is erect and pubescent. The inflorescence is panicle-like with red, reflexed bracts. Flowers are small, with yellow petals. Flowering begins in late spring to early summer.
