Back to catalogue

Adiantum (lat. Adiantum) or maidenhair — a genus of ferns belonging to the monotypic family Adiantaceae (C.Presl) Ching (the latter is quite often included in the family of Pteridaceae).

Found in moist shady places in Australia and New Zealand. Perennial herbaceous plants; rhizome creeping, thin. Leaves pinnate three to four times, broadly ovate, 45—60 cm long and 30—45 cm wide; lower pinnate leaves of the 1st order triangular; leaflets rhomboid-lobed, 2 cm long and 0.8 cm wide, herbaceous, dark green. Sporangia located on the upper part of the leaflets, kidney-shaped. Petiole 30—50 cm long, rough. Ornamental species. Grows well in warm and semi-warm rooms. Requires great care when transplanting due to a very fragile rhizome.
