Actinidia
Actinidia
Actinidia (lat. Actinidia) is a genus of woody lianas in the family Actinidiaceae. The botanical name of the genus derives from the Greek word 'actis' — ray; for the radiating arrangement of the styles of the ovary.
Actinidia are relict plants that have persisted in East Asia since the Tertiary period, when the Far East had a subtropical climate. Later, with the glaciation of the Northern Hemisphere, climatic conditions became more severe. However, the glaciation did not affect some areas of the Far East, although it had a negative impact on the climate. As a result of the cooling, a large portion of the Tertiary flora of the Far East disappeared, and only a few, including Actinidia, adapted to the changed conditions and have survived to the present day.
