Family Gesneriaceae. Native to Central America. Greatly loved by houseplant growers for its brightly colored flowers and the attractive flared corolla. Flower colors are very diverse: purple, blue, bright pink, yellow, etc.; leaves are velvety.
Translated from Greek, achimenes - "fearful of cold", achimenes poorly tolerates sudden temperature drops, cooling and drafts.
Achimenes erect (Ахименес прямостоячий) - Achimenes erecta - a trailing (ampelous) plant with red flowers on long (up to 50 cm) reddish stems.
Achimenes long-flowered (Ахименес длинноцветковый) - Achimenes longiflora with purple flowers; the alba variety has white flowers with purple spots. Also a trailing plant; leaves grow up to 8 cm long.
Achimenes hybrid (Ахименес гибридный) - Аchimenes hibridia - the most common in trade, with flower color varying by cultivar.
Achimenes is a tuberous plant. In winter, during dormancy, it is pruned and the tubers are stored in winter storage (a dark, cool place).
