A medium-sized shrub, 1–2 m high, 1–2 m wide; hemispherical; very slow-growing.

Flowers: after leaf emergence, reddish; June.

Fruits: initially reddish, very ornamental.

Leaves: Deeply divided, initially dark red, later red-brown, orange in autumn.

Root system: Shallow, slightly sensitive.

Requirements: prefers semi-shaded locations, suffers from dry air, poorly tolerates wind and late frosts.

Soils: prefers slightly acidic, loamy, sandy, humus-rich substrates; grows poorly on heavy or compacted soils.

Note: does not respond well to shaping; pruning is not recommended.
