An excellent, upright shrub or small tree, 3-4 (5) m high, 2-3 m wide; sometimes with multiple stems; with age it grows faster in width than in height; slow-growing.

Flowers: after leaf emergence, reddish; June.

Fruits: initially reddish, very decorative.

Leaves: graceful, 5-9-palmately lobed, initially bright red, later dark red.

Root system: shallow, somewhat sensitive.

Requirements: prefers semi-shaded sites, suffers from dry air, does not tolerate wind and late frosts well.

Soils: prefers slightly acidic, loamy to sandy, humus-rich substrates; grows poorly on heavy or compacted soils.

Note: does not respond well to shaping; pruning is not recommended.
