Family Iridaceae. Occurs in South Africa.
Stem robust, strongly branched, 75–110 cm long. Leaves lanceolate, oblique, long (50–70 cm) and wide (5–7 cm). Inflorescence dense, many‑flowered. Flowers bright, red‑yellow, with a tongue‑shaped upper lobe and slightly smaller lateral lobes; tube curved, up to 3 cm long. Corm large, rounded. 2n=26.
There is one variety - var. major hort - a garden form with larger flowers and leaves.
