Family Liliaceae. Grows in dry forests on sands in the subtropical and warm-temperate zones of the eastern USA.

Plants 30-120 cm tall, without pubescence. Bulb oblong-ovoid, covered with scales. Leaves at the base of the stem numerous, linear, obtuse; stem leaves sparse, short. Flowers on long pedicels in a dense cylindrical terminal raceme; the perianth about 1 cm in diameter; its segments 6 in number, ovate, white, without a nectar gland. Ovary ovoid, three-lobed. Styles 3. Fruit - a capsule, opening above the middle. Flowers in late spring–early summer. All parts of the plant are extremely poisonous; a poison for flies is prepared from the bulbs.
