Family Lamiaceae. Distributed in Central and Southern Europe and in Western Asia, in the Transcaucasus and in southern Dagestan.

A species closely related to A. elegans. Distinguished by the presence of a awn on the lower floral glumes of both florets of the spikelet and by large panicles. Flowers in late spring–early summer.
