North America. A rhizomatous shrub 2-3 m high, with erect, slightly branched shoots and large, up to 25 cm wide, five-lobed leaves. Flowers in many-flowered panicles from June to August. Individual flowers 3-5 cm wide, purple and fragrant. A very beautiful species for shady, moist sites, which grows especially well under tall trees and on moist, humus-rich soil. Hardiness zone 4.
