A genus represented by 1000 wild species, distributed predominantly in the high-mountain regions of north-western China (Himalayas), exceptionally diverse. Apart from Rh. fer-rugineum and Rh. hirsutum found in the Alps, many rhododendrons (azaleas) originate from the eastern United States, the Balkans, and Japan.
