Fruit trees
Genus Prunus L.
Prunus L.
A genus that includes about 200 species, most of which occur in the temperate zone. These are deciduous trees or shrubs; the exception are the evergreen cherry laurels (Pr. laurocerasus and forms). There is a great abundance of forms in this genus. The most beautiful ornamental cherries originate from Japan. They vary in vigor and growth habit. Not all ornamental cherries are tree-like. There are also low cherries reaching about 1.75 m in height. Therefore they are well suited for small gardens. It is hard to understand why these treasures are still overlooked. In addition, ornamental Japanese cherries are distinguished by their unsurpassed flowering and shoots, most often bronze in color. There are forms that flower twice a year: in spring and autumn (Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’). Among approximately 100 Japanese garden forms we find single and double forms of white, pink, red and yellowish flowers. It should be noted that in double-flowering forms, unlike single-flowering ones, the flowers can last up to 14 days. All ornamental cherries prefer fertile and moist slightly acidic soil and (except for evergreen species and cultivars) like bright sun. Hardy. As woodland plants in urban green plantings and large parks, on a bank or a hill with gentle slopes, they are incomparably attractive.
