Discovered around 1855. A medium-sized tree, narrow habit, columnar, branches grow upwards, 16-20 m in height and 4-5 (-6) m in width. Dark green leaves, reddish when unfolding, opposite, up to 15 cm across, with five to seven lobes, toothed, with milky sap, improving the soil. Overwintering buds are red or reddish-purple. Autumn coloration is a bright golden-yellow, sometimes reddish.
