Shrubby plants with creeping rhizomes, less often an herbaceous stem with hollow nodes, flattened on one or on both sides; nodes convex, shoots tufted or almost verticillate; leaves on short petioles, at the base, with a network of veins arranged in a staggered (checkerboard) pattern. About 30 species in East Asia and the Himalayas.
