North America. 7 (-9) m in height, most often a multi-stemmed tree with an open crown and dazzling white stripes on the bark, which stand out beautifully against the smooth green, later reddish-brown, bark. Very large three-lobed leaves, 12-18 cm long, turn a pure yellow color in autumn. Very ornamental, especially when unfolding. Flowers yellow, in May, in pendent racemes. Prefers shady, moist sites. Should be used more often.
