Japan, Korea. In nature found in moist places, up to 10 m in height, reaching 8 m; a tree with light-colored, 5–11-lobed leaves and partial carmine autumn coloration. Flowers purple, from June to July. The fruits, with the wing (samara) positioned at an obtuse angle (in September), also have significant ornamental value. As with the following forms, it grows best on slightly acidic soil in sunny or semi-shaded locations. All forms are recommended for rock gardens. Frost-hardy plant.
