Hop-hornbeam

Deciduous trees, very similar to Carpinus, but usually distinguished by doubly serrate and pubescent leaves and (as in Betula) male catkins that form already in autumn, which arise from lateral buds, with 12 or more stamens on short, branched stalks, at the base of broad scales.
