Of the approximately 50 species in this genus, only one originates from Europe and North Africa, all the others are native to East Asia. These are tall evergreen or deciduous shrubs with simple, opposite, entire-margined leaves. White or yellowish fragrant flowers grow in terminal panicles. The fruits – most often black berries. They make almost no special demands on soil and site, however the location should not be too wet. They show good growth in any cultivated soil. Privets can be used in various plantings. They are not only excellent and popular plants for hedges, tolerating any pruning, but also attractive flowering and fruiting shrubs.
