Eastern North America. Reaching 6–8 m in height and width, most often multi-stemmed, a broadly and upright-growing shrub or tree with a small crown. Leaves alternate, 3–8 cm long, elliptic; shoots reddish; magnificent autumn coloration from yellow-orange to crimson. Blooms abundantly in April, white, star-shaped solitary flowers in graceful, erect racemes up to 6 cm long. One of our most valuable ornamental shrubs, which is especially striking in bloom.
