Discovered by Wilson in 1901 in China and introduced to Europe; named after the Berlin scientist Professor Kolkwitz. A branched, open shrub reaching 3–4 m in height and as much in width, with slightly drooping branches. The bark is brownish-red and smooth, slightly rough; older shoots first have white-gray, then brown, peeling bark.
