Native range — Western Transcaucasia, the Balkans, the eastern Mediterranean.

This is an evergreen, semi-woody plant 20—40 cm high. Oblong or elliptical leathery leaves, dark green above, bluish-green below, evergreen. Golden-yellow, large flowers almost 8 cm in diameter, with numerous stamens. They bloom from July to September. A fairly undemanding species. It tolerates both prolonged drought and wet soil. Optimal conditions — a sunny site, as well as partial shade. It is recommended to lightly cover the plants for winter. Used on horizontal sections of rock gardens, on large rock structures, on slopes and in dry places. In cultivation since 1676. Has an ornamental cultivar 'Citrinum' — with lemon-yellow flowers.
