Europe, Asia. 15-20 (-25) m in height and 10-12 (-14) m in width, a long-lived tree with a picturesque, open, branched crown. Bark and shoots are green-brown, sticky and glabrous when the leaves unfold, later the bark is dark green with longitudinal fissures. Flowers are unisexual, male catkins brownish, from March to May, female flowers inconspicuous; pollination by wind. Fruits are woody cones, ovoid, 1.8 cm long, ripen in September/October; dispersed by wind.
