China, Japan. Reaching 7 m in height, sometimes a tree-like shrub with a broad and open habit. Leaves three-lobed. Autumn coloration bright red. Blooms in late May, after leaf-out, with yellowish-white flowers in many-flowered, fragrant, erect panicles. Fruits bright red, from August to September. In Central Sweden, because of their frost hardiness, they are used in protective shelterbelts. An undemanding plant, resistant to industrial atmospheric pollution.
