More than 100 species that are distributed in Central Europe, the Alps, the Mediterranean and Western Asia. These are glabrous or silky-hairy subshrubs, partly spiny, which are most often found in dense stands in the Mediterranean or on heaths and on low-productivity meadows in the Atlantic climatic zone. All species prefer poor, unfertilized acidic soil and tolerate prolonged drought. Especially suitable for rock gardens and heaths, as well as for planting on terraces.
